Services
Eldwyn is known as comm.cslabs.clarkson.edu
officially; it has records for
comm.cosi.clarkson.edu
as well, and generally answers regardless of Host
header (including to plain old comm
or its IP address). Its LetsEncrypt
certificate is only valid for the official name, however, as of this writing.
Notes
BIOS and Boot drive
Eldwyn's BIOS is so old it cannot boot off an SSD. One attempt to find a newer version of the BIOS was unsuccessful.
Normally we use an SSD to boot our servers. Since we can't use a boot SSD we just use the normal hard drives. To increase the reliability the drives we set up the roots partitions in a RAID 5 using mdadm
.
One of the drives is configured to be the boot drive. If that drive dies there are two options
- Boot a live disk, mount the root partition, and recover any important data.
- Boot a live disk and try to manually install grub on one of the other drives.
Godspeed.
Floppy
We had to blacklist the floppy drive to suppress some errors.
# /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-floppy.conf`
blacklist floppy
